Use of 99mTc-MIBI scintigraphy in suspected Breast diseases

Abstract
Breast cancer is the most common disease for women in USA, and Recently, the incidence of breast cancer is growing in the Korea So early detection of breast cancer is the main issue for the suspected breast disease.

99mTc-MIBI(methoxy isobutyl isonitrile) was used for the imaging with lung lesions, myocardial perfusional abnormalities. It also has been used for nonspecific tumor imaging of various tumors including breast cancer.

The purpose of our study is to characterize benign and malignant lesions by using 99mTc-MIBI for breast imaging.

Materials and methods :Ninety-three female patients participated in this study who is in suspected breast disease, between January of 1996 and December of 1996. A dose of 20 ~ 25mCi 99mTc MIBI was used for the study. The subjects underwent planar imaging after the intravenous administration of 99mTc MIBI to the contralateral side of the breast lesion. Both prone lateral and supine anterior views were obtained using a gamma camera.

Results :The patients¢¥ age ranged from 28 to 61. We report an overall sensitivity of 80.0% and specificity of 78.3% for the diagnosis of breast cancer. In palpable lesions, the sensitivity was 82.8 % with a specificity of 76.2%, while in nonpalpable abnormalities the sensitivity was of 50.0% with a 100.0% specificity.

Conclusion :Scintigraphy with 99mTc MIBI has high specificity and adequate sensitivity for the noninvasive diagnosis of breast cancer. But in our study, sensitivity is not so high compared to other studies. So further study about this subject must be continued.
